McCartee's Barn Antiques have been a lifelong passion for Sue Clary, who learned the business inside and out from her parents Marilyn and Don Chambers, former owners of O'Wagon Antiques in Greenwich, NY. She began as an ebay business selling antiques under the name salemgrayman. As her business grew, she was inspired to include a retail shop which could also highlight and support the incredible artistic community in which she lives. When contemplating a location for their shop, she looked no further than the Clary's backyard and a 200 year old barn that needed a lot of work. The restoration of the barn has been a labor of love, mainly by Sue's husband Bill Clary. SURYA POLO CLUB A polo/equestrian facility created to grow the sport of polo at a grassroots level. Battenkill Valley CreameryThe McEachron family has been dairy farming in the Battenkill Valley region for more than a century. Today they manage a herd of 400, up from twelve cows in 1902. In 2006, father and son team Don and Seth McEachron opened the Battenkill Valley Creamery to diversify the family business and protect themselves from fluctuating milk prices. The fledgling business, which sells milk and cream in plastic and old-fashioned glass bottles, is already a huge success. What makes their milk products unique? The McEachrons grow their own feed and use no synthetic growth hormones on their animals. Their mixed breed herd produces milk that is higher in calcium and non-fat solids, giving their milk a fresh, full flavor. To increase distribution, the McEachrons recently began selling their products from a Milk Wagon, which makes stops at the Fort Edward Agway and Falls Farm and Garden in Hudson Falls. Be on the lookout for homemade ice cream when the Battenkill Valley Creamery begins making their own soon.
The Battenkill Valley Creamery self-service shop is open daily from 6am-8pm. For more information on products and retail outlets, call Seth McEachron at 518-859-2923 or visit them on the Web at http://www.blogger.com/www.battenkillcreamery.com.
Alden Painting
John Alden began painting in 1979 and has spent the last eighteen years as a self-employed house painter. Before coming to Salem, he worked in several communities on the east coast, including Newport, Rhode Island, where he painted the Tennis Hall of Fame, and Lake George, where he worked on custom homes. Originally from Great Barrington, Mass., Alden came to Salem when he found a piece of property where he could imagine building a home and raising his children. "We're pretty fortunate to live here," he says. "It's a nice place to live. If you've done a lot of traveling, you see that."
Alden takes on both residential and commercial projects, and this past summer, worked on the East Hebron Presbyterian Church. Other projects include the Abrams, Tomasi and Sauer buildings on Main Street in the village. He also painted the Wirt home on Archibald Street and the stately Victorian next to the Post Office. He most enjoys residential work, talking with homeowners about their projects and advising them on colors and other details. "I like being creative with colors," Alden says. "I like the fine detail work." In the winter months, Alden welcomes interior painting jobs. To find out more about Alden Painting or to schedule a consultation, call (860) 941-2201. |
