Wilson Homestead logoWilson Homestead
Old Books and Antiques

Wison Homestead opened in the fall of 2010. It is located on Chamberlin Mills Road in Hebron, in an 18th century English barn. The homestead was settled in 1772 by James and Martha (Hopkins) Wilson. Five Wilson generations occupied the farm for 218 years. In 1990, Sally and Joe Brillon became the second owners and began rehabilitating the house and eventually adapted three of the five barns for new uses.
Wison Homestead barn interiorThe Brillons owned Towpath Antiques and Books in Fort Ann for thirty-four years and it will remain open to reduce inventory that is twice as large as the barn can house.
In Hebron they will carry a general line of antiques, especially early furniture and architectural parts. The specialty of the shop is "nonfiction books for the curious". Topics include New York and Vermont history, architecture, antiques, decorative and fine arts, textiles, women, cookbooks, gardening, nature, Native Americans, travel, biography, Black History and children's books.
Wilson Homestead also offers open hearth cooking classes in the old saltbox, center chimney house in March and November by advanced registration. Participants use the stone fireplace and bake-oven to prepare a complete mid-day meal. The price is $45.
Wilson Homestead is located 7 miles north of Salem, off NYS Rt. 22, 1/2 mile west on Chamberlin Mills Road. The shop is open Saturday and Sunday 11-5, May through November. We are also open by appointment all year.

GARDEN DESIGNGarden Design Nancy Hand Higby
Nancy Hand Higby

Born and raised on a farm in Washington County, Nancy Hand Higby is a landscape architect who specializes in residential garden design. As the principal of the Dirt Divas, she works with a loose group of wonderful women (not to be confused with a wonderful group of loose women) who joyfully Garden Designplant and maintain gardens. When not caring for gardens, designing gardens, and writing about gardens, she lives and laughs with her husband, David, in a meadow on the west slope of the Taconic foothills in the Battenkill watershed uplands. Nancy is strong, David is good looking, and their two grown children, Maggie and James, are perfect ~ well….above average ~ and are now exploring the great wide world.

Each of Nancy's unique garden designs reflects the client's vision, personality, heartfelt dreams, and sense of whimsy. In addition to residential design work, her current passions are historic garden restorations and kids' gardening programs.

Photos can be seen at: www.nancyhandhigby.com

A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley College of Environmental Design's School of Landscape Architecture, Nancy spent twenty years working with firms in New York, Boston, San Francisco and Philadelphia before returning to Washington County to raise her family. She has practiced large and small scale natural resource management, environmental planning, and landscape design in both rural and urban settings. The quiet winter months are the best time to prepare spring garden plans.

If you're considering a garden consultation, Nancy would be happy to hear from you. nhigby@verizon.net

McCartee's Barn

Antiques have been a lifelong passion for Sue Clary, who learned the business inside and out from her parents Marilyn and Don Chambers, former owners of O'Wagon Antiques in Greenwich, NY. She began as an ebay business selling antiques under the name salemgrayman. As her business grew, she was inspired to include a retail shop which could also highlight and support the incredible artistic community in which she lives. When contemplating a location for their shop, she looked no further than the Clary's backyard and a 200 year old barn that needed a lot of work. The restoration of the barn has been a labor of love, mainly by Sue's husband Bill Clary. McCartees Barn interiorCapturing the feel that Sue wanted for their shop, Bill was able to preserve the original characteristics of the barn while integrating modern touches throughout. Surrounding the barn is the work of Dan Chambers, who salvaged the original marble from the barn foundation and put it to use building patios, benches, and walls. The shop is located at 23 East Broadway in Salem, NY. The regular hours are 7 days a week from 10am to 5pm. On September 11th we will host an OPEN HOUSE at 23 E Broadway titled "ORLYK, SWEETLAND and KESSLER" from 10 to 5. Brad Kessler will read from his book Goat Song at 2:00 and an artist reception will be at 3PM, and exhibition will be from September 11th to October 12. The event will parallel the Washington County Cheese Tour and Salem Chamber of Commerce Harvestfest, so come enjoy a great day in Salem, NY.

I am an
Anger management facilitator
And a Mediator  …….
And a  Listener
It is all about better choices
It is all about understanding why we behave the way we do
It is all about listening
It is all about making decisions
It is all about taking responsibility
It is all about not giving our power away
It is all about meeting those four needs (love, freedom, fun and power)
And it is all about our expectations…
And it is all about where we want to be and what we have to change to get there…

Battenkill Valley Creamery

The McEachron family has been dairy farming in the Battenkill Valley region for more than a century. Today they manage a herd of 400, up from twelve cows in 1902. In 2006, father and son team Don and Seth McEachron opened the Battenkill Valley Creamery to diversify the family business and protect themselves from fluctuating milk prices. The fledgling business, which sells milk and cream in plastic and old-fashioned glass bottles, is already a huge success. What makes their milk products unique? The McEachrons grow their own feed and use no synthetic growth hormones on their animals. Their mixed breed herd produces milk that is higher in calcium and non-fat solids, giving their milk a fresh, full flavor. To increase distribution, the McEachrons recently began selling their products from a Milk Wagon, which makes stops at the Fort Edward Agway and Falls Farm and Garden in Hudson Falls. Be on the lookout for homemade ice cream when the Battenkill Valley Creamery begins making their own soon.

The Battenkill Valley Creamery self-service shop is open daily from 6am-8pm. For more information on products and retail outlets, call Seth McEachron at 518-859-2923 or visit them on the Web at http://www.blogger.com/www.battenkillcreamery.com.

Alden Painting

John Alden began painting in 1979 and has spent the last eighteen years as a self-employed house painter. Before coming to Salem, he worked in several communities on the east coast, including Newport, Rhode Island, where he painted the Tennis Hall of Fame, and Lake George, where he worked on custom homes. Originally from Great Barrington, Mass., Alden came to Salem when he found a piece of property where he could imagine building a home and raising his children. "We're pretty fortunate to live here," he says. "It's a nice place to live. If you've done a lot of traveling, you see that."

Alden takes on both residential and commercial projects, and this past summer, worked on the East Hebron Presbyterian Church. Other projects include the Abrams, Tomasi and Sauer buildings on Main Street in the village. He also painted the Wirt home on Archibald Street and the stately Victorian next to the Post Office. He most enjoys residential work, talking with homeowners about their projects and advising them on colors and other details. "I like being creative with colors," Alden says. "I like the fine detail work."

In the winter months, Alden welcomes interior painting jobs. To find out more about Alden Painting or to schedule a consultation, call (860) 941-2201.
