"Adirondack Awakening" world premiere at Fort Salem Theater Memorial Day weekend ![]() The adventure of Adirondack Awakening begins with the discovery by Europeans Champlain and Hudson of an area already inhabited and hunted for at least a thousand years by Native American societies. As they vie for advantage over the natural resources of the region, fighting, starving, dying, or perhaps growing wealthy beyond imagination, a new national and worldwide economy emerges from the grim and beautiful Adirondack wilderness.
No aspect of this four hundred year journey (or its evolutionary roots four billion years before that) is too serious to be lampooned, skewered, and satirized by the musical pens of its author/performers, Fort Salem's Artistic Director Jay Kerr and Emmy Award-winning film writer/director Stephen Trombley. Whether lamenting the near extinction of the beaver or mocking the misery of men literally lost in the woods, whether eavesdropping on the diary of a teenage girl taking the TB cure and falling in love with a fellow patient in Saranac Lake or simply celebrating the invention of the paper bag (Adirondack timber and ingenuity), they use musical styles and the musical revue format to comment on events in history that somehow missed inclusion in mainstream history textbooks.
