Mix It Up with the ChamberChamber Mixer food

The Chamber Mixer on June 16, sponsored by Laura’s Garden, was a great success. Chamber members enjoyed great food, good company and picked up a little gardening know-how. Gardening expert Dick Raymond and his wife Jan shared their gardening experience and answered questions about gardening from members. Dick was the vegetable gardening specialist at Garden Way Gardens in Vermont for 15 years where the original “Joy of Gardening” was filmed. His now-classic book was inspired by the television program.

Zuela Performs in Salem August 22

SALEM, NY — Zuela, a horn-driven electric dance band that plays all original instrumentals with an exotic worldbeat flavor, will perform in Salem on Saturday, August 22 as part of the Summer Sounds of Salem concert series. This Cambridge-based band is influenced by reggae and African dance music, and features exotic scales and styles from all over the world. Led by well-known area musician Barry Hyman, Zuela has been together since 2001. The free concert begins at 11:00 am and takes place at the Gazebo on Main Street during the weekly farmers market.

ZUELA consists of Lyle Somers on drums, Jacob Goldstone on sax, Andrew Horning on guitar, Hannah Maguire on bass, and Hyman, who writes and arranges all the material as well as playing guitar. Zuela

Hyman formed ZUELA in 2001 with two very young musical prodigies, Lyle Somers and guitarist Lucas Sconzo, to perform his instrumental compositions, and while the membership has changed over the years as the young musicians graduate and go off to college, the spirit of the group has stayed the same. The members of the band have always been current or former students of Hyman, between the ages of fourteen and twenty, but this is no mere student ensemble. Hyman trained these young musicians to the strict standards of professionalism that he has acquired during his forty-year performing career, and no one listening to their two tightly crafted CDs would guess that the band members are anything other than well-seasoned old timers.
